Communications requirements in the modern battlespace are growing by leaps and bounds. As a result, the Department of Defense needs sophisticated imaging sensors, networked autonomous systems, and operational reachback.
Traditional RF systems will not suffice due to bandwidth allocation problems and susceptibility to interception and jamming.
Tactical Free Space Optical Communications
Optical Communications (OC) uses light to transmit data, providing virtually unlimited bandwidth. Free Space OC (FSOC) transmits data on beams propagating through the atmosphere; Optical "antennas" are intrinsically high-gain, and have inherently low probability of interception.
Tactical FSOC (TFSOC) supports moving platforms, light-weight low-power terminals, and passive operation for low probability of detection.
Technologies that make this possible include modulating retroreflector (MRR), a bright and efficient beam source, and precision pointing and tracking.
Optical Communications Mission
Our mission is to exploit opportunities in TFSOC. We will build on our DMOI contract to aggressively commercialize the NRL supporting technologies, both individually and at the system level. We will continue to generate new concepts for the tactical deployment of this technology.
